What Should I Do With Myself?

I want a career. I want a career that I totally enjoy. I'm thinking I'd be great at many things, but don't have a lot of time to spend years and years in school. So I've been kicking around some ideas such as cosmetology, nursing, or going back into the computer business. But the one thing that keeps edging into my brain that I've not seriously considered yet is Culinary school.

Let's face it, I'm a natural in the kitchen. Remember the Panang I showed you guys on my blog? I learned how to make that through trial and error. I ate enough of it in restaurants that I was able to detect the flavors individually and get an idea of how it was made. And if I detected a flavor that I wasn't familiar with I asked what it was. Anyone who has eaten my Panang and eaten it in restaurants can tell you that mine is spot on and has authenticity to it.

There isn't anything about cooking that intimidates me, I'm always making up my own recipes on the fly, and everyone who eats my food raves about it. I can even make freezer bag food for backpacking that's not half bad lol! But I think I still have a lot to learn about food. With the right training I feel I could master it and make a name for myself.

I don't know a thing about Culinary school, how much it costs, etc...or if it's at all realistic given my circumstances, but I am going to look into it. If any of my readers know a professional chef I'd sure like to talk to them...so send 'em my way...

Finding a career that you love and can embrace is a wonderful thing. Go for it!

Wish I had a chef to throw your way.

Happy Cooking! :-)

I looked into culinary school in Portland, it wasn't that expensive. Definitely time consuming. But after alot of soul-searching, I realized that although, I'm a great cook and I LOVE to cook, I love to cook on my own terms... when I want, what I want and for who I want. I don't know if I would get the same joy out of cooking for a living. Is that weird? But, I've known many chefs that adored their work. I just don't have the temperament!

I have an appointment tomorrow with an admissions person at the Texas Culinary Arts College here in Austin.
I don't know if I will actually pursue this or not, but I figure at least getting some information and asking a bunch of questions couldn't hurt.

Sounds like a great career! Hope you enjoy your meeting tomorrow and find out lot's of good info. I know of a poodle handler that quit after years of showing poodles and went to a culinary school in NYC. I think she is now living in SC and might be working as a chef, not sure.

I had thoughts similar to Trinas. I ad a hobby business once. It should have stayed a hobby, becuase it sucked the joy out of it when I was tied to a schedule.

But good luck with it. You could make it work for you.

I want to go back and do a Masters in Ancient and or Medieval History

Hey Ginny,

I hope I wasn't too negative with my last comment.

Go for it!!

No worries Sean. :)
I know that sometimes trying to turn a hobby into a career can be bad. I will weigh it all out in my mind and be very careful with the decisions I make.

So someday we can point to the Iron Chef and say, "hey, that's Ginny from her blog."

That wouldn't be nerdy of me or anything would it?

Be sure to let us know how things went!

I'll definitely give a report on what I think after the interview today. I'm getting a lot of negative comments from people(not you Sean)about how hard it is to make it in this industry. I have a lot of questions to ask...
